Treasure Research Checklist
A systematic checklist for evaluating treasure legends, locating sources, verifying claims, and documenting findings. Complete this checklist before any field exploration to maximize your chances of success and minimize wasted effort.
Phase 1: Legend Evaluation
- โ Identify the core claim (who, what, when, where, why)
- โ Trace the legend to its earliest known source
- โ Count the number of retellings between the source and you
- โ Check for anachronisms (language, technology, currency)
- โ Verify that named individuals appear in census, tax, or property records
- โ Rate overall plausibility (High / Medium / Low / Insufficient Data)
Phase 2: Source Identification
- โ Search newspaper archives for contemporary reports
- โ Check county courthouse for land records, mining claims, probate
- โ Search National Archives (NARA) for military or government records
- โ Check BLM GLO Records for land patents and survey plats
- โ Search genealogical databases for individual verification
- โ Contact local historical societies or museums
- โ Identify any oral history sources (local interviews)
Phase 3: Map & Geographic Verification
- โ Locate historical maps of the area (USGS, Sanborn, GLO, railroad)
- โ Overlay historical maps with modern satellite imagery
- โ Identify terrain changes (river shifts, road reroutes, deforestation)
- โ Check for natural disasters that may have altered the site
- โ Verify that landmarks in the legend match mapped features
- โ Assess current land ownership and access permissions
Phase 4: Evidence Assessment
- โ Count independent sources supporting the core claim
- โ Identify contradicting evidence and assess its weight
- โ Rate the quality of each source (primary vs secondary, contemporary vs retrospective)
- โ Document remaining unanswered questions
- โ Make a go/no-go decision for field exploration
Phase 5: Legal & Permissions
- โ Determine land ownership (private, state, federal, tribal)
- โ Research applicable treasure trove and salvage laws
- โ Obtain written permission from landowner (if private land)
- โ Check for protected site designations (historical, archaeological)
- โ Understand reporting requirements for significant finds
