Why Can a Short Poem Stay with Us?

A poem may leave room where an essay would explain. A gate repaired at noon can suggest duty, frustration, or care without naming any of them. Readers bring their own experience into that space.

That does not make poetry automatically more emotional than other writing. A story or letter can move us just as deeply. Poetry gives writers a particular set of tools: compression, repetition, rhythm, and the charged pause at a line ending.
