Where Poems Begin

Inspiration often arrives as a detail that refuses to leave: the sound of a spoon in a jar, a strange cloud, a sentence overheard at a bus stop. Keep the detail before you know what it means. Later, put it beside another image and see what happens.

The five line exercise is a useful way to catch one of those moments.
