A tale of a wandering cowpoke who discovers the most unusual cactus in all of Southwest New Mexico - one that grows fiery chili peppers instead of spines, leading to a spicy new way of life.
Out where the red dust rolls beneath a copper-colored sky,A cactus raised its peppers where the desert would not lie.
The cowboy tipped his hat and said, “Well, mercy, what a crop—”
Then built a little cookfire where the hot winds never stop.
He traded tales for supper, and the supper traded heat,
Till every lonely traveler found a chair and something sweet.
“The desert gives its gifts,” he said, “when you learn to look on through—”
And the chili cactus bloomed beneath the evening blue.
