Why Random-Date Coins Exist (and When They’re Smart)
Dealers often sell "Random Date" Eagles for $2 less than specific years. Here is the secret behind the discount.
When you click "2024 Silver Eagle," the dealer has to go to the bin marked "2024." When you click "Random Date Silver Eagle," the dealer grabs the first coin he touches.
You Are Paying for Logistics
"Random Date" is cheaper because it saves the dealer labor. He doesn't have to sort, categorize, or inventory specific years. He passes that savings on to you.
When to Buy Random
- Stacking for Weight: ALWAYS buy Random. Different dates of bullion coins (Eagles/Maples) contain the exact same silver.
- Gift Giving: Buy Specific. (Birth year, Graduation year).
- Collecting: Buy Specific (Key Dates).
Pro Tip: Sometimes "Random" bins contain valuable back-dates that the dealer was too lazy to sort. It's a treasure hunt.
