Building a Simple, Safe Coin Storage System (The 3 Layers)

You do not need a bank vault. You need defense in depth. Here is the 3-Layer System that protects against Fire, Theft, and Moisture.

Defense in Depth means that if one layer fails, the next layer holds.

Layer 1: The Environment (Ammo Can)

  • Goal: Protect against Moisture and localized Fire.
  • Method: Put your tubes inside a metal .50 cal Ammo Can ($15). Throw in a Silica Gel Pack. The rubber gasket keeps air out.

Layer 2: The Physical Barrier (The Safe)

  • Goal: Protect against Smash-and-Grab Thieves.
  • Method: Put the Ammo Can inside a TL-15 or TL-30 rated Safe. Bolt the safe to the concrete floor.

Layer 3: The Alarm (Perimeter)

  • Goal: Protect against Time.
  • Method: Your home alarm system. The goal of the safe isn't to be impenetrable; it is to buy time until the police arrive.

The Golden Rule: Tell NO ONE. OpSec (Operational Security) is your strongest layer.
