Buying Coins for Long-Term Holding (The 20-Year Plan)

If you plan to bury it in the backyard for two decades, buying the wrong coin can be a disaster. Here is what lasts.

If your time horizon is "Forever," your priorities change. You don't care about "flipping." You don't care about "hot trends." You care about Durability and Density.

Priority 1: Durability (The "Rot" Factor)

Did you know silver can spot? "Milk spots" are ugly white cloudy marks that appear on modern silver coins (like Maples and Kangaroos) over time. While it doesn't reduce the silver weight, it makes them harder to sell to picky buyers.

Best for Long Term: vintage US Coinage (90%). It has survived 100 years in pockets, dirt, and circulation. It won't develop milk spots. It is chemically stable.

Priority 2: Density (The "Space" Factor)

If you accumulate for 20 years, you will run out of safe space. Silver takes up a lot of room. $10,000 of silver is a heavy shoebox. $10,000 of gold is a stack of 5 coins.

Strategy: When your silver stack fills your safe, do not buy a bigger safe. Trade your silver for gold. (This plays the Gold/Silver Ratio). Gold is the ultimate long-term storage vehicle because it does not tarnish, rust, or take up space.

The "Set It and Forget It" Portfolio

  1. Foundation: 500 oz of Silver (Monster Box of Eagles or Bag of Junk).
  2. Growth: Convert all surplus savings into 1 oz Gold Buffalos.
  3. Storage: Silica gel packs (moisture control) are mandatory.
