Volunteer & Donor Spotlights
Celebrating the extraordinary individuals whose dedication, generosity, and passion make our mission possible and transform lives every day.
Meet Sarah Chen
Reading Mentor & Program Coordinator
Her Story
Sarah joined our literacy program three years ago as a reading tutor and has since become one of our most dedicated volunteers. As a retired elementary school teacher, she brings 30 years of classroom experience to help struggling young readers build confidence and skills.
"When I retired, I knew I wasn't done making a difference in children's lives," Sarah shares. "This program allows me to continue my passion for education while giving back to the community that supported my own family when we needed help."
"Every child deserves to experience the joy of reading. When I see that 'lightbulb moment' when a word suddenly makes sense, it reminds me why this work is so important."
Student Success Story
"Marcus came to us reading two grade levels behind. After eight months working with Sarah, he's not only caught up but has discovered a love for adventure books. His confidence has transformed both in reading and in life."
Innovation in Action
Sarah created our "Reading Buddies" program, pairing older students with younger ones. This peer mentorship approach has increased reading engagement by 40% and built lasting friendships across age groups.
