Back to Modern Memory Approaches
Active Recall
By Randy Salars·
Short Answer
Test yourself frequently instead of rereading. Each successful retrieval strengthens the memory trace and makes future recall faster and more reliable.
How to Do It (Minimal Setup)
- Turn notes into questions (“How would I explain this?”).
- Answer from memory before checking.
- Correct and tighten the prompt to be more specific.
- Repeat later (spaced repetition makes this efficient).
Common Mistakes
- Looking at the answer too soon (no retrieval effort).
- Practicing recognition (multiple choice only) instead of recall.
- Prompts that are too vague to grade (“understand chapter 3”).
