Elon opens a new school for his children
Six years ago, Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, entered a meeting with Josh Dahan, his children’s teacher. Elon asked Josh whether he would be open to starting an experimental school in his company to transform the way we learn.
Josh agreed, and Ad Astra School was created under Elons directive.
Ad Astra did not have a grade or an age division. Instead of memorizing information, children learn to work with others and solve problems together. Synthesis was the most popular class in school.
This class had kids who played games that challenged their thinking and real-world problems. Chrisman Frank saw Ad Astra’s children excited about Synthesis when he visited them in the early 2017 semester. This was something he had never seen at school. He knew not every child would be able to afford Ad Astra, so along with Christopher, they launched Synthesis in November 2020 as a monthly subscription-based school.
Synthesis, an online school inspired by Elon Musk’s Adastra, is now open to everyone.
The idea behind Synthesis was to make education more about problem-solving. We let kids play games and let them discover for themselves how they work.

Education today is geared towards the middle and bottom. We need to change this. Josh Dahn and Elon Musk created a fast-paced program that was unapologetically fast.
The ultimate goal is to make the world more innovative. There is probably one in 10,000 contributors or innovators creating new knowledge for the globe at any given moment.

What does Synthesis mean?
Musk redefined how we think about education based on first principles thinking. He simplified the facts and then used them to guide us instead of analogizing.
For example, Elon Musk refused to accept rockets’ prices. Instead, he looked at first principles and asked, “What’s a Rocket Made Of?” He then listed the components and calculated the cost. He discovered that the cost of raw materials was nearly 100 times less than he expected. He decided to build his rocket instead of buying them.
These are the first principles that Elon Musk developed for education.
1) Choose to batch children based on their ability, not their age.
Students are usually grouped by their age in regular schools, which is essential. Traditional schools expect students from the same grade to learn at the same rate. Elon Musk opposes age segregation.

Software and games can replace lectures and books.
The majority of schools teach using lectures as the primary method of instruction. They do not allow for debate, discussion, or disagreements. Schools do not teach students how to think actively, but they teach them to listen passively.
You don’t learn how to solve problems from books. The teacher may be right, but students know that the teacher is correct because they have the solution in the book. Reality is not always right or wrong. Instead of teaching students how to think for themselves, schools tend to teach them to follow the rules.
The Synthesis school does not design simulations for content but rather for experiences. Simulators are complicated, and there are no right or wrong answers. With one facilitator, 18-20 children work together in groups. They don’t give lectures. They let the students discover and learn game rules themselves.
Simulators are designed to help children think differently about real-life problems and prepare them to deal with the chaos and complexity of life.
Students make decisions that have implications and meaning. Students must understand and weigh the consequences of their choices, even if there is no clear answer.
There is no such thing as a wrong answer in the synthesis school. There are many ways to solve a problem and many solutions to a question. The synthesis school allows for different interpretations and multiple answers.
