Alexander the Great on How to Overcome Your Fears

How to have the courage to face your fears

“Through every generation of the human race there has been a constant war, a war with fear. Those who have the courage to conquer it are made free and those who are conquered by it are made to suffer until they have the courage to defeat it, or death takes them.” ― Alexander the Great

Few warriors can boast of their conquests like Alexander The Great who was able to conquer the known world from Greece to India in just four short years.

He was fearless and believed himself to be a God.

But what was his secret?  How could he stand time after time in the heat of battle and conquer his fears?

He had tremendous self-confidence

Upon entering Central Asia and India, Alexander’s army first encountered war elephants.

These huge animals, fitted with steel spikes on their tusks, made such an impression on the Macedonian troops that Alexander felt the need to sacrifice to the God of Fear the night before the battle.

During the battle, Alexander set an example for his own men by standing his ground and his fearlessness bolstered their courage, enabling them to overcome their fears and face any opponent without fear.

He believed that “upon the conduct of each depends the fate of all.”

Here are a few ways you can develop self-confidence

1. Look at what you’ve already achieved
2. Think of things you’re good at
3.  Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
3.  Surround Yourself With Positive People
4.  Practice Positive Self-Talk and affirmations.

Napolean Hill, in his book “Think and Grow Rich” suggested the following formula be read daily to develop self-confidence:

Self-Confidence Formula

I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my Definite Purpose in life, therefore, I DEMAND of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.

I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality, therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for thirty minutes daily, upon the task of thinking of the person I intend to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture of that person.

I know through the principle of auto-suggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it, therefore, I will devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of SELF-CONFIDENCE.

I have clearly written down a description of my DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life, and I will never stop trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth and justice, therefore, I will engage in no transaction which does not benefit all whom it affects.

I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people. I will induce others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others.

I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing a love for all humanity, because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success.

I will cause others to believe in me, because I will believe in them, and in myself.

I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory, and repeat it aloud once a day, with full FAITH that it will gradually influence my THOUGHTS and ACTIONS so that I will become a self-reliant, and successful person.

He persisted until he succeeded in spite of fear

Don’t be afraid to do something because you have failed in the past.

Alexander never considered a temporary failure as true defeat, but he kept trying.

He said, “There is nothing impossible to him who will try.”

So never consider temporary defeat as a failure.

Just consider it an experiment that didn’t work and keep trying until you succeed.

He faced his fears

He looked at the face of fear head-on and took action.

He had been told since he was a child that he was the descendant of heroes and that a hero never backs down.

Whenever he was faced with a fear he took action immediately and the fear became smaller and he kept at it until he defeated it.

In his youth, he was trained by Aristotle and he read a book by Xenophon’s entitled “Anabasis” or  ‘The March of the Ten Thousand’

It was the courageous story of a march north across food-less deserts and snow-filled mountain passes, towards the Black Sea and the security of Greece.

In this story, these men were faced with the fear of a sure death if they remained where they were, but they took action and made a march of thousands of miles to safety in very difficult circumstances.

This book taught him to always face his fears and to take action in the face of fear.

Recognize that when you see fear it is an invitation to go on the attack.

Most people perceive change as a threat. If they lose their job, get betrayed by a friend, get hit by a big unexpected bill, they freak out and revert to fear/panic mode.

Use the tough situations that life throws at you as a catalyst to make necessary changes.

Remember, the “Good Life” doesn’t go to those paralyzed by fear, it’s won by those who attack even in the midst of tough situations.

So remember in order to conquer fear like Alexander the Great:

1.  Develop tremendous self-confidence
2.  Consider all failures as mere experiments and the more experiments you make, the sooner you will succeed
3.  Face your fears head-on and take action immediately
