Anderson said on Friday that he never fully supported the government’s three-tiered system. “I challenged the closure of gyms, we talked about the hospitality sector being hit,” he told the BBC. He said it wasn’t fair that the hospitality sector has to close while it shares equal blame for infections with schools and higher education, retail, and the community. The mayor said he wanted a so-called national “circuit-breaker” lockdown to stop the spread of the virus, a measure suggested by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE). The government has so far avoided another national lockdown, attempting to balance the benefits with the harm the government’s restriction measures would bring. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the financial consequences of a second lockdown would be “disastrous.”
