Myanmar Sees First Gay Election Candidate as LGBT Issues Gain Traction

Myanmar’s first openly gay candidate to run for a parliamentary seat in the conservative Buddhist country’s November elections wants to put an end to the abuse that members of the LGBT community say they suffer at the hands of the police. Myo Min Tun, 39, has stepped up as a People’s Pioneer Party (PPP) candidate for a seat in the regional parliament in Mandalay representing a constituency in the local capital of the same name. Mandalay is Myanmar’s second-largest city with a population of 1.2 million people. The florist and wedding planner says he wants to protect the rights of the LGBT community in the city, where gay men, transgender people, and same-sex couples have complained of wrongful arrests on trumped-up charges and physical assaults by police officers. In 2013, a group of gay men and transgender women accused police of arbitrarily arresting them, and then beating them, verbally abusing them, and forcing them into humiliating positions. Police officials denied the allegations. “This is not lawful,” Myo Min Tun said about the incidents. “As a LGBT member of parliament, I think I could help protect them,” he added. The PPP, a relatively new party started by a lawmaker formerly affiliated with but later dismissed by the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, was registered with election authorities in October 2019. More than 200 PPP candidates are running for dozens of parliamentary seats in state and regional elections. Myo Min Tun is among the nearly 7,000 candidates from more than 90 parties running for legislative seats in the Nov. 8 elections. The parties have until Nov. 6 to present their platforms and programs and drum up support among voters. In past election campaigns, political parties have not taken a stance on the LGBT community or issues that affect it. But this election cycle is different. ‘We are more attentive to these issues’ The NLD and other political parties have included mentions of the LGBT community in their election campaign statements, though they have not paid much attention to the community in the past. “[Because] their lifestyles are different from those of the majority, some of them have been mocked or looked down upon,” said NLD spokesman Myo Nyunt. “Now, we are more attentive to these issues, so we’ve added them as one of the party’s goal to address in future.” A campaign speech by Than Htay, chairman of the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), outlining the party’s policies and programs via state-owned radio and television on Sept. 15 did not address LGBT issues. Nevertheless, USDP spokesman Nandar Hla Myint told RFA that the party does not discriminate against Myanmar citizens on the basis of sexual preference or gender identity. The Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), one of the country’s largest ethnic minority parties, has indicated that it will listen to the voices of people with different sexual preferences and prevent discrimination as part of its youth policy. However, SNLD Central Executive Committee member Sai Tun Aye did not mention the LGBT community in his televised speech on the party’s platform The Myanmar National Congress Party (MNCP) also said it will support LGBT issues. “Every person must have the freedom to express their gender orientation, feelings, desires and beliefs,” said MNCP chairman Kaung Myint Htut in a televised election campaign speech outlining the party’s platform. “Same-sex orientation is not a deficiency of moral character,” he said. “We need to respect the integrity and job opportunities of all gender orientations in society. We need to respect the integrity and job opportunities of all gender orientations in society.” “[The] Myanmar National Congress Party stands for all gender orientations [and] … will respect and protect the rights of all gender orientations,” Kaung Myint Htut said. Myo Min Tun, a candidate from the People's Pioneer Party who is running for a regional parliamentary seat in Myanmar's 2020 elections, visits supporters in Mandalay in an undated photo. Photo courtesy of Myo Min Tun/Facebook Same-sex sexual activity criminalized The MNCP, which supports State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, wants to amend the 2008 constitution to strip Myanmar’s powerful military of its political power. The military controls three defense and security ministries, and its officers are appointed to a quarter of the seats in national, regional, and states legislatures. Its legislative block in the national parliament can wield a crucial veto over proposed constitutional amendments. It remains to be seen whether the political parties will live up to their stances on support for the LGBT community once their candidates are elected lawmakers, given deeply ingrained homophobic social attitudes and discrimination against LGBT people in the conservative, Buddhist-majority country of 54 million people, activists say. LGBT rights groups have long demanded changes to Section 377 of the Myanmar’s Penal Code and to Sections 30 and 35 of the Police Act, said Aung Myo Min, a well-known LGBT activist and executive director of the human rights group Equality Myanmar. Under the laws, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people can be harassed, arrested, and subject to violence and other abuse by authorities with impunity. Section 377 of Myanmar’s colonial-era Penal Code criminalizes same-sex sexual activity regardless of whether it is consensual or done in private, and carries a penalty of imprisonment from 10 years to life, though such sentences are rare. The section also contributes to a culture of impunity for police who infringe upon the human rights of LGBT people through physical brutality or extortion, activists say. The two sections of the 1945 Police Act, which pertain to the powers of special police and reserve officers and the apprehension and punishment of reputed thieves, are widely used by authorities to target LGBT people under concocted charges as a form of harassment and persecution. Ma Htet, a transgender makeup artist and Facebook celebrity who lives in Yangon, said members of the LGBT community have no means of recourse when their rights are infringed upon. “The laws should be aiding them,” she said. “The punishments should fit the crime. Only then will their lives be safe, and they will feel encouraged.” Visibility and acceptance grows Though Myanmar does not recognize the gender identity of transgender people or same-sex unions, the LGBT community gained visibility and the beginnings of acceptance amid political reforms under the previous quasi-civilian government that was in power from 2011 to 2015. Seven years ago, Aung San Suu Kyi, then Myanmar’s opposition leader, called for the decriminalization of homosexuality in a speech at the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific. She said that the criminalization of homosexuality was hindering efforts to treat HIV-infected gay men in the country. Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD party pledged to improve Myanmar’s human rights record in the run-up to the 2015 elections. Her government published a National Youth Policy in 2018 mandating the end of discrimination against youth on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, but it has done nothing to change anti-LGBT laws during its five years in power. Since then, there has been a growing climate of acceptance and tolerance of the LGBT community consistent with global trends. In the countdown to the 2020 vote, the NLD has called for the elimination of discrimination against LGBT people in its 34-page election manifesto released on Sept. 1. Aung Myo Min of Equality Myanmar suggested that the political parties are paying lip service to the LGBT community in the countdown to the elections to try to win more votes. “The political parties never made remarks about LGBT issues before, but now they are including them in their [election] manifestos,” he said. “I appeal to them to keep fighting for LGBT issues when they are actually elected to parliament,” Aung Myo Min said. Federal Authorities Have Already Documented Two Cases In Which Votes Have Been “Discarded” In Key Swing States

The integrity of our elections is of paramount importance, because if our ability to choose our own leaders is compromised that undermines everything that our system of government is based upon.  So every American should be hyper-sensitive to any allegation that our votes are being tampered with, because any attack on the voting process is an attack on all of us.  This is one issue that should be able to unite Republicans and Democrats, and hopefully people across the political spectrum will report anything suspicious that they notice over the coming weeks.  And as I become aware of troubling incidents, I will share them with my readers, because the integrity of our elections is definitely one of my hot button issues.   When I heard that some military ballots in Pennsylvania had been tampered with, that immediately set off alarm bells.  Federal officials are telling us that they recently discovered that nine military ballots in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania had been “improperly opened” and “discarded”… According to a letter from U.S. Attorney Freed to the county elections director, the inquiry into Luzerne County’s ballot handling began Monday, and found that nine military ballots had been “improperly opened” by elections staff and “discarded.” He wrote that “the majority” of the recovered ballots and envelopes were found in an outside dumpster — seven of the nine ballots outside their official envelopes, and two that elections staff had apparently recovered and sealed back in their envelopes. He said investigators also found four “apparently official” absentee ballot envelopes that were empty. It appears that someone wanted to get rid of those votes permanently.  After all, you certainly don’t put votes in a dumpster for safekeeping. Members of the U.S. military sacrifice so much to defend our nation, and so any tampering with their votes is especially grievous. According to law enforcement authorities working on the case, seven of the votes “were cast for presidential candidate Donald Trump”, and the other two votes are unknown because they had been resealed. Since Monday, FBI personnel working together with the Pennsylvania State Police have conducted numerous interviews and recovered and reviewed certain physical evidence.  Election officials in Luzerne County have been cooperative. At this point we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded.   Investigators have recovered nine ballots at this time.  Some of those ballots can be attributed to specific voters and some cannot.  Of the nine ballots that were discarded and then recovered, 7 were cast for presidential candidate Donald Trump. Two of the discarded ballots had been resealed inside their appropriate envelopes by Luzerne elections staff prior to recovery by the FBI and the contents of those 2 ballots are unknown. It is extremely suspicious that all of the votes that had been “discarded” were for only one candidate. Hopefully federal authorities will nail whoever was responsible for this, because throwing actual votes in the trash is a major offense. And considering the fact that Pennsylvania is such an important swing state, those votes could actually help to determine who becomes the next president of the United States. Speaking of swing states, discarded ballots have also been found in Wisconsin. In fact, officials say that three trays of mail that included absentee ballots were recently discovered sitting in a ditch… The U.S. Postal Service is investigating how three trays of mail, including absentee ballots, ended up in a ditch line in Wisconsin, a swing state whose voters could prove crucial in the upcoming elections. The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office said the mail was found around 8 a.m. Monday morning near the intersection of highways 96 and CB, near the Appleton International Airport. How in the world do ballots just happen to end up in a ditch? This is just one of the reasons why I very much prefer the way that we used to do things.  When we require the vast majority of the population to vote in person, there is much less of a chance that votes will end up in a ditch or in a dumpster. Unfortunately, times have changed, and in some states an extremely high percentage of voters will cast their votes by mail in this election. In Wisconsin, the percentage of absentee votes used to be in the single digits, but thanks to the pandemic that we are currently experiencing things have dramatically changed… Prior to the pandemic, just 6% of Wisconsin voters cast absentee ballots by mail – however during the state’s April primaries, that number jumped to 60%, when 1.1 million out of 1.55 million votes were conducted through the postal service. During the August partisan primary, Wolfe said that 82% of the 867,000 votes cast were via absentee ballot. During said primaries, thousands of voters across the state complained that they never received the absentee ballots they requested. In one case, a Milwaukee postal worker said that three bins of absentee ballots had never been delivered. Overall, tens of millions of Americans will vote by mail in 2020, and that makes me very nervous. There are just so many opportunities for things to go wrong, and that would be true even if everyone was trying to do the right thing. Sadly, there are always people that try to cheat, and four of them were just arrested by authorities in Texas… Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced four arrests Thursday on dozens of felony charges in connection with an alleged vote harvesting scheme during the 2018 Democratic primary elections in Gregg County. Those four individuals could be going away for a very long time, because collectively they are facing a total of 134 felony charges… Gregg County Commissioner Shannon Brown, Marlena Jackson, Charlie Burns and DeWayne Ward face 134 felony charges in total, according to Paxton’s office. The allegations include election fraud, tampering with a governmental record, mail-in ballot fraud and more. “To increase the pool of ballots needed to swing the race in Brown’s favor, the group targeted young, able-bodied voters to cast ballots by mail by fraudulently claiming the voters were ‘disabled,’ in most cases without the voters’ knowledge or consent,” Paxton’s office alleged. Incidents of vote tampering and election fraud really do happen, and we should be very thankful when authorities are able to catch those that are responsible. Those that follow my work regularly already know how deeply concerned I am about the future of our nation.  Decades of exceedingly foolish decisions are catching up with us in a major way, and yet we just continue to steamroll toward oblivion. But even though I am absolutely disgusted by so many of our “politicians”, I very much want the American people to be completely free to pick whoever they want each and every election. Without free and fair elections, there is no way that our Republic would be able to work.  So let us be extremely diligent in guarding the integrity of our votes, because if we lose that we lose any hope of ever turning things around politically. ***Michael’s new book entitled “Lost Prophecies Of The Future Of America” is now available in paperback and for the Kindle on Amazon.com.*** About the Author: My name is Michael Snyder and my brand new book entitled “Lost Prophecies Of The Future Of America” is now available on Amazon.com.  By purchasing the book you help to support the work that my wife and I are doing, and by giving it to others you help to multiply the impact that we are having on people all over the globe.  I have published thousands of articles on The Economic Collapse Blog, End Of The American Dream and The Most Important News, and the articles that I publish on those sites are republished on dozens of other prominent websites all over the globe.  I always freely and happily allow others to republish my articles on their own websites, but I also ask that they include this “About the Author” section with each article.  In addition to my new book, I have written four others that are available on Amazon.com including The Beginning Of The End, Get Prepared Now, and Living A Life That Really Matters. The Stage Has Been Set For The Most Chaotic Election In U.S. History

This article was originally published by Michael Snyder at The Economic Collapse Blog.  If you are deeply concerned about what is going to happen in November, you are definitely not alone.  Experts on both sides of the political spectrum have been warning that it is very likely that we will not know the winner of the presidential election until well after November 3rd, and everyone pretty much agrees that the period of uncertainly that we will be forced to endure will not be good for our nation. Those of us that are old enough clearly remember the pain that the election of 2000 caused.  The outcome hinged on the results from the state of Florida, and the endless recounts were finally brought to a conclusion after 36 very stressful days with George W. Bush up by just 537 votes.  Unfortunately, some are saying that we are potentially facing “the 2000 election on steroids” because vote counting will be going on in multiple swing states long after election night is over. The big reason why this election is going to be so different from previous elections is because so many Americans are going to be voting by mail.  According to one recent survey, a whopping 37 percent of all voters plan to cast their votes by mail this time around… Thirty-seven percent of registered voters said they are likely to vote by mail in the November election, by receiving a mailed ballot and either mailing it back or returning it in person, according to a new survey released Tuesday by the Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape project. Other estimates put the number as high as 40 percent, and it could go even higher than that because some states are promoting mail-in voting extremely aggressively. In fact, as I detailed yesterday, one of my readers told me that he and his wife “have received three requests each for mail-in ballots” over the past five weeks. We are also being told that Democrats are far more likely to vote by mail than Republicans are.  According to the same survey that I quoted above, supporters of Biden are more than twice as likely to vote by mail than Trump supporters are… Among them, 48% of voters who plan to vote for Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Biden said they are likely to vote by mail, according to the survey. That’s more than twice the 23% of voters backing President Donald Trump who said they are likely to vote by mail. It takes a lot of time to open and count ballots that have been mailed in.  If that work could be done in advance, that wouldn’t be that much of a problem. Unfortunately, there are 14 states where it is prohibited by law to count mail-in ballots before Election Day, and that includes some of our most important swing states… Tens of millions of Americans will try to vote by mail because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But officials in 14 states are prohibited from processing mail-in ballots until Election Day; counting them could take days or weeks. Those states include Pennsylvania and Michigan, battlegrounds that could decide the election. It should deeply alarm all of us to hear that it “could take days or weeks” for some of these states to finally count every single ballot. And that is just the first count.  I am not even talking about any potential recounts. At this point, many Democrats are warning of a possible “red mirage” on the night of the election.  Many of them believe that it will look like President Trump is winning on election night, but that Joe Biden will ultimately win once all of the mail-in votes are finally counted. As evidence, they point to the fact that there has been a “blue shift” in all national elections going back to 2004… Since 2004, mail-in ballots have been disproportionately Democratic, a phenomenon known as the “blue shift.” So, barring a landslide, we could see a “red mirage” on Nov. 3, an election-night count of in-person votes that suggests that Trump has won — even though millions of votes for Biden are waiting to be tabulated. Personally, I do believe that it is very likely that President Trump will be leading on the night of the election, but what is really going to matter is what happens during the days that follow. If a Trump lead evaporates and Biden is eventually declared the winner, there will be widespread allegations that the election was stolen, and that could cause tremendous explosions of anger. And the big tech companies are already preparing for post-election chaos.  In fact, Facebook has openly announced that they will purposely “restrict the circulation of content” in order to try to control civil unrest… Facebook announced this week that it may restrict certain aspects of its platform following November’s general election as part of a larger effort to limit social unrest. A spokesperson for Facebook suggested that executives including Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg may censor specific information if they believe it is likely to heighten political tensions following the election. According to a report by the Financial Times, Facebook announced this week that it will “restrict the circulation of content” following November’s election to curb violence and social unrest. The announcement follows efforts by Facebook to address concerns from those who have alleged that the platform aids in voter suppression and promotes election-misinformation. What is this country going to look like if it takes weeks or even months to officially declare a winner? No matter who ends up winning, I believe that the process is so flawed that it is going to tear the country apart. And no matter what the final result is, a large percentage of the population will never accept the outcome as being legitimate. This is already one of the most difficult chapters in U.S. history, and a bitterly contested election result will only make things even worse. At this point, even the mainstream media is admitting that we are heading into “wild” times.  The following comes from CNN… Ask anyone about the next six weeks and they will likely give you some version of this as a response: Whoa boy. It is going to be wild. Which it is! The last 42 days of a presidential election are always filled with unpredictable storylines, big moments and, more than anything, uncertainty. Just about the only way that we can avoid the type of scenario that I have described is if there is an overwhelming landslide on election night. Wouldn’t that be nice if that actually happened? It would be wonderful if one of the candidates conceded on November 3rd or November 4th and we could avoid weeks or even months of endless national strife, but I don’t think that is going to happen. Instead, I believe that both sides are going to fight to the bitter end, and the end will definitely be very bitter indeed. I have published thousands of articles on The Economic Collapse Blog, End Of The American Dream, and The Most Important News, and the articles that I publish on those sites are republished on dozens of other prominent websites all over the globe. Alarming American Attitudes About 2020 Election

Please respect our republishing guidelines - Click Here A recent survey reveals some alarming attitudes among Americans regarding the 2020 election. As Election Day draws closer, the race has become increasingly heated. The recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has only intensified the campaign and raised the stakes even further. But the likelihood of a contested election and the rhetoric coming from both sides seem to have cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process. The question is, will this affect future elections, or is 2020 an anomaly? Majority of Americans Believe Election Will Not Be Fair A recent Yahoo News/YouGov survey showed that a small percentage of Americans think that the 2020 election will be “free and fair.” The poll, taken Sept. 15-17, revealed that Americans of all political persuasions doubt the integrity of the upcoming election. The survey noted: “Half of Trump supporters (50 percent) say the election will not be free and fair; more than a third of Biden supporters (37 percent) agree. Overall, the number of Americans who say the election will not be free and fair (46 percent) is more than twice the number who say the opposite. Another third (32 percent) say they’re not sure what to expect.” Even worse, a majority of Americans believe that the presidential election could be rigged. When asked: “Election-security experts say a U.S. presidential election cannot be rigged. Do you believe them?” a whopping 57% answered “no.” Additionally, 60% of respondents think that “at least some fraud will occur.” If the results of the poll are any indication, Americans seem to have lost faith in the electoral process, at least during this season. But are their fears about fairness warranted? Will the Election Be Rigged? American opinions on the integrity of the electoral process seem to contradict the experts’ views on the matter. Michael Adams, a law adviser to Vice President Mike Pence, expressed doubts about the possibility of a rigged election. “You’re not going to see widespread fraud in a presidential or a Senate or a governor’s race,” he argued. “It’s just not feasible. And it hasn’t been [feasible] in 70 or 80 years.” Other experts have echoed Adams’ remarks. Edward Foley, an election law expert at Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law, told Morning Edition that it is nearly impossible to rig a presidential election. “I think it’s extraordinarily unlikely that we’re going to have a rigged election because of the fact that our system is so decentralized,” he explained. But despite widespread agreement among the experts, the public remains doubtful. While there could be several factors that contribute to this skepticism, it is not difficult to see that politicians and corporate media outlets might deserve the lion’s share of the blame. Individuals on both sides have pre-emptively accused their opposition of cheating. In fact, it seems inevitable that the nation will experience a contested election in 2020. If Trump loses, the right will likely blame voter fraud related to mail-in ballots. On the other hand, if former Vice President Joe Biden loses, the left will point to voter suppression, specifically of minorities. These factors, combined with the fact that foreign powers are actively attempting to meddle in the election, could explain why people might not trust the results. Both China and Russia are looking to promote Biden and Trump, respectively. What About Future Elections? If and when the 2020 election is contested, it will ignite yet another political conflagration. The losing side’s allegations of cheating will warrant close scrutiny; even if they are proven false, those on the losing side will still cry foul. This cycle could quickly become the starting point of a pernicious trend when it comes to future elections. Will every presidential race become a vicious debate over the results? What if this paradigm spreads to congressional races? If this happens, the nation could be in for a political crisis during each election season. Of course, it is essential to point out that if the fiery rhetoric and heated hyperbole subside, America could avoid such a dire situation. But given the record of the country’s politicians and media figures, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon. ~ Read more from Jeff Charles.

PANDEMIC PANIC: 2nd Wave Climax – FED CRIPPLED!

This article was contributed by Lior Gantz of the Wealth Research Group.  What NO ONE expects is a deep recession; there are a number of CONFLICTING THEORIES as to what the recovery will look like, but nothing about entering a recession. The consensus is that the pandemic is highly contagious, but not lethal; “with a vaccine coming and FEAR LEVELS subsiding, a recovery has begun,” is the general idea. Where OPINIONS DIFFER is about its strength and inclusiveness of the recovery: Dichotomy – This is the thesis that claims BIG BUSINESS is eating up SMALL BUSINESS, so the recovery is HAPPENING, but it isn’t a healthy one. We’ll see GDP printing better stats with each PASSING QUARTER, but poverty is increasing, since BIG gets BIGGER and small gets TINY. Vaccine-Dependent – This camp believes that the PENT-UP DEMAND will be unleashed, once first-responders agree to take the vaccine. That stamp of approval will LEAD to CONFIDENCE worldwide; I want to show you how much DISTRUST THERE IS in the value stocks, which are companies that dominate their industries but are growing slowly and predictably, not fast and sporadically. The market believes that each company that isn’t on the cloud is going out of business, which has led to a bubble: Courtesy: Zerohedge.com You should consider THE FACTS about the pandemic before I move on to the THIRD CAMP, which are the investors who believe in the “V”-shaped or quick “U”-shaped recovery. They’re BUYING DIPS, as I am right now, following our FOUR WATCH LISTS: 1, 2, 3, and TECH. The MOST IMPORTANT fact is that the PANDEMIC ITSELF isn’t lethal; the real crisis is overwhelmed hospitals and insufficient medical staff. While no one likes to see CROWDED HEALTH FACILITIES, if those do return, this would be nowhere near the panic levels of March, when healthy people feared FOR THEIR LIVES. Therefore, to expect markets to price in MARCH LOWS is a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Instead, be agile in your thinking; there are REAL BARGAINS out there. Flexibility is needed, though. Don’t wait for sellers to hand you once-in-a-generation prices for the second time in six months. Courtesy: Zerohedge.com As you can see, tight presidential races WEIGH ON PRICES, since it’s a huge unknown factor, especially when the parties are THIS POLARIZED on policy and public ideas. It’s a tale of two Americas with two opposite agendas. Where does gold come into the picture? Slow “V” or Fast “U” – Those who are FREE-MARKET oriented understand that businesses have muscled through the ROUGH PATCH and that capitalistic forces are driving innovation in this post-COVID-19 reality. Wall Street and institutional money will be ENTERING EQUITIES on this severe dip and you ought to know that BUYING NOW is playing with fire, but I am certainly am. Gold stocks have also reached their MOMENT OF TRUTH: Courtesy: U.S. Global Investors They MUST PENETRATE below the average of 2.5; that will signal a MULTI-YEAR TREND, which will confirm the bull market. The September dip has allowed us to find companies with GREAT SUPPORT and I’m going to present new stock profiles, since, as the chart above shows, we’re ON THE CUSP of the REAL MOVE. Myanmar Parties Say Electoral Body Censored Their Campaign Speeches for Public TV

Two small political parties in Myanmar have accused the country’s election commission of censoring their campaign speeches to be aired on state broadcast media before general elections in November, in what rights activists say is a violation of freedom of speech in the nascent democracy. The Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS) and the Dawei Nationalities Party (DNP) said Tuesday that the Union Election Commission (UEC) edited policy criticism from campaign speeches to be broadcast on Myanmar state television (MRTV) and radio. The DPNS cancelled its government-allotted broadcast. The presidentially appointed UEC is responsible for organizing and overseeing the country’s elections and for vetting parliamentary candidates. Campaign broadcast rules require that political parties submit scripts of their speeches to the UEC for approval. All parties are given 15 minutes of airtime on state TV and radio to present their platforms to voters during the election campaign period from Sept. 8 to Nov. 6. State-owned MRTV and radio channels are broadcasting the campaign speeches on a rotational basis, with fewer than 30 of the country’s 90 parties taking part so far. DPNS candidates are vying for parliamentary sets in 16 electoral districts, while DNP candidates are contesting for eight seats in the 28-member regional parliament in southern Myanmar’s Tanintharyi region. The DPNS, a political party associated with the country’s broader democracy movement, cancelled its broadcasts scheduled to be aired on Tuesday because the UEC cut the mention of controversial topics from its speech, said party chairman Aung Moe Zaw. The deleted topics included the Letpadaung copper mining project in Sagaing region, disputes over farmland in a village in Ayeyarwady region, and a cement factory project opposed by residents of Aungthabyae village in Mandalay region, he said. The UEC also deleted part of the campaign speech that quoted a UNICEF report to highlight the impoverished conditions of children in Myanmar and a reference to young people as an “oppressed” class who shun government employment because of discrimination, Aung Moe Zaw said. “Parties have the right to express their visions and statements freely, [but] now the UEC is limiting what they can say in their campaign speeches,” he told RFA’s Myanmar Service. “This is problematic.” “Limiting the contents of campaign messages is not good,” he added. “I don’t think the UEC has the authority to limit our campaign speeches.” ‘An abuse of power’ Similarly, Thurein Hlaing, secretary of the DNP, said the UEC removed parts of his campaign speech on the rights of the Dawei (Tavoy) ethnic people and the higher cost of electricity in Tanintharyi region. “We are touching on issues about socioeconomic conditions,” he told RFA. “We are also speaking out about the rights of our ethnic group — our lack of self-determination and rights as a minority group.” The party’s speech addressed inequities in power rates with Tanintharyi residents having to pay 200-1,000 kyats (U.S. $0.15-0.75) more per kilowatt per hour of electricity than people in other parts of Myanmar, and questioned whether they were considered second-class citizens. The DNP also contended in the speech that ethnic Dawei groups had been incorrectly classified as one of the ethnically predominant Bamar groups, leading to losses of rights as a minority group and a lack of self-determination in their region. Thurein Hlaing said he sees no reason why the election commission cut parts of the speech because the DNP had not violated rules on hate speech, or disregarded the sovereignty of the state or the unity of the people. “They don’t have the right to do it. It is an abuse of their power,” he said. RFA contacted the UEC for comment, but no one responded as of publication time. Myo Nyunt, spokesman of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, said he was not aware of the cases, and had no control over the UEC. The party is fielding more than 1,000 candidates in the Nov. 8 vote, about 80 percent of whom are seeking reelection to their parliamentary seats. ‘Violating right to free speech’ Rights activists criticized the UEC’s move as an infringement on free speech and blasted the election commission for abusing its authority. Maung Saungkha, executive director of Athan, an activist organization he founded to promote the right to freedom of expression in Myanmar, said censoring campaign speeches is a violation of freedom of expression. “The commission should evaluate the content on the basis of whether it is discriminatory or defamatory,” he told RFA. “I found that the censored speeches did not fall into either category,” he said. “They were just touching on the issues of politically persecuted groups and the hardships of ordinary people.” “The UEC is not only abusing its authority, but also violating the right to free speech,” Maung Saungkha added. Aye Kyaw, executive director of Open Myanmar Initiative, said censoring campaign speeches is not appropriate in terms of international standards and that the UEC doesn’t have the right to do it. In August, New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the UEC to change its rules governing political parties’ access to state-owned broadcast media to ensure that all parties could present their positions without undue interference. The UEC stipulated in a July announcement that it would pre-approve all political broadcasts “under overly broad and vague restrictions on what political parties can say,” thereby violating international standards for the protection of freedom of speech, according to HRW. “The UEC’s regulations hamstring the political opposition by effectively prohibiting any criticism of the government, existing laws, and the military,” said Linda Lakhdhir, HRW’s Asia legal adviser, in a printed statement. “Doing so strikes at the heart of political speech and campaigning, and seriously undermines the fairness of the electoral process,” she said. International standards call for a transparent and independent body that is separate from the UEC to set and regulate broadcast content during elections without prior approval or undue limitation on topics, HRW said. Nearly 7,000 candidates from more than 90 parties, as well as independents, are vying during the elections for 1,171 seats available in both houses of the national parliament and in state and regional legislatures. NASDAQ NOSEDIVES: Can You Handle THE HEAT?

This article was contributed by Tom Beck of Portfolio Wealth Global. We warned all throughout the MONTH of AUGUST that markets just don’t accept the REALITY of VALUATIONS anymore and one week afterward, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ peaked and have since entered a correction (NASDAQ for now). Historically, as we explained, September is the market’s WORST MONTH, but this is getting even more SCREWED UP since Europe is considering a second quarantine period while elections in the U.S., which are the BIGGEST UNKNOWN, are rapidly approaching. Listen closely: Americans are so programmed by propaganda ON BOTH ENDS of the spectrum that the questions asked to everyday citizens reflect the SERIOUS NUMBNESS of the average voter: Courtesy: Zerohedge.com As you can see, the RACE IS TIGHT and the stakes are high! Yesterday, I watched the amazing documentary “The Social Dilemma,” which proves beyond any shadow of a doubt what the business model incentives of social media giants are, and it will be them that DECIDE THE OUTCOME of this presidential run come November. Between now and then, here’s what could HELP TRUMP, and below that is what could help BIDEN: Vaccine news – the cure will obviously be positive for Donald Trump, who will RIDE THE COATTAILS, taking credit for the record-fast approval process. Quarantines and school closures – I have no doubt that Democratic states are going to MAKE LIFE a living hell for residents because they must show Trump’s inadequacy with containing the pandemic. Debates – obviously, the more we allow these two TO CONFRONT each other, the more Trump has a chance to shine. Social unrest – if chaos returns, police defunding claims will bring voters to Trump, who is against it. Police brutality, on the other hand, indirectly helps Biden. Courtesy: Zerohedge.com For now, markets are still IN SHOCK that Trump’s approval ratings aren’t what they were pre-COVID-19. In January, no one predicted a close race, so I believe that if Biden’s chances are real, it could be AN INITIAL re-rating of equities downwards due to the high probability of higher corporate taxes. So, when looking at this -12% correction in the NASDAQ, don’t assume it has anything to do with the presidency because it doesn’t. Prices of equities are TOO HIGH and it’s dawning on institutional investors that they can invest in the recovery by going LONG the beaten-down industries, thus leaving the “bubble territory” to the retail public to MESS WITH. Now, after the dynamite has exploded, we believe institutions will use stink bids and get back into tech. We sure are exploring the matter using THIS new watch list. After already being out of the woods, the SECOND-WAVE mentality that is taking over is depressing and I expect many controversies in the COMING MONTHS. Lastly, we’re working on a BIG ALERT that you don’t want to miss, so stay focused on what’s coming. President Trump is Breaking Down the Neck of the Federal Reserve! He wants zero rates and QE4! An Obscure Law In Pennsylvania Could Result In 100,000 Mail-In Ballots Being Thrown Out Without Ever Being Counted

We are still more than 40 days away from the election, and already we are seeing huge red flags regarding the integrity of the voting process in some states.  No matter who you support, you should want the upcoming election to be fair.  Every American should be able to vote, all of those votes should be counted, and the decision that the American people make should be respected.  Unfortunately, it appears that this is likely to be the most chaotic election in modern American history, and wrangling over what votes should be counted and what votes should not be counted is likely to persist long after election night is over.  In the end, it would not be surprising to see the outcome of the election end up at the Supreme Court, and that is a scenario that none of us should want to see.   Let me give you an example that shows why I am so concerned.  In Pennsylvania, a recent legal decision requires officials to throw out mail-in ballots without counting them if voters do not return them in “secrecy envelopes”… Philadelphia’s top elections official is warning of electoral chaos in the presidential battleground state if lawmakers there do not remove a provision in Pennsylvania law that, under a days-old court decision, requires counties to throw out mail-in ballots returned without secrecy envelopes. This is a very big deal, because large numbers of votes could be voided in one of our most important swing states. According to the Washington Times, it is being estimated that “more than 100,000 mail-in ballots” could potentially be thrown out… Some 30,000 to 40,000 mail-in ballots could arrive without secrecy envelopes in Philadelphia alone in November’s presidential election, Deeley estimated, and the state Supreme Court’s interpretation of current law forces election officials to throw them out. Statewide, that could mean throwing out more than 100,000 mail-in ballots in the Nov. 3 presidential election, according to some estimates. In 2016, President Trump won the state of Pennsylvania by just 44,292 votes. So eliminating 100,000 votes could potentially swing the outcome from one candidate to the other. And if the national results are very close, whoever wins Pennsylvania could ultimately determine who wins the White House. Sadly, this is not the only reason to be deeply concerned about the integrity of the vote in Pennsylvania.  Last week, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania decided that the deadline for mail-in ballots will be “the Friday after Election Day”… The Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued three rulings on Thursday, extended the deadline for mail-in ballots to the Friday after Election Day, ruled voters could use dropbox to return mail-in ballots, and removed the Green Party’s presidential ticket from the ballot. So does this mean that countless numbers of voters in the state could potentially cast votes after election day and still have them counted? I am just imagining a scenario where one party is barely behind in the state on election night and then makes an all-out push to have more people vote by mail on Wednesday and Thursday.  If the party that is in the lead does not match that late push, that could also be something that flips the outcome of the election. There are so many things that could go wrong, and I believe that we are headed for a giant mess no matter who wins. Signs of trouble continue to pile up in other states as well.  In Wisconsin, a federal judge just decided that absentee ballots “can be counted up to six days after the Nov. 3 presidential election”… A federal judge ruled Monday that absentee ballots in battleground Wisconsin can be counted up to six days after the Nov. 3 presidential election as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. The highly anticipated ruling, unless overturned, means that the outcome of the presidential race in Wisconsin might not be known for days after polls close. Under current law, the deadline for returning an absentee ballot to have it counted is 8 p.m. on Election Day. Wisconsin is another one of the most critical swing states, and so this is very troubling news. In so many states, we are going to have to wait for a long time after the election before we get final results, and that period of uncertainty is going to be very bad for our nation. I just have such a bad feeling about what is going to happen in November.  It is being estimated that up to 40 percent of the population will vote by mail, and that number is far, far higher than anything that we have ever seen before. And we also have millions and millions of people registering to vote without ever having to come face to face with anyone.  In fact, Facebook has announced that they have “already registered 2.5 million Americans to vote”… Facebook says it has already registered 2.5 million Americans to vote in the upcoming presidential election, with a goal of registering 4 million total before Election Day. In a blog post in advance of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, the social-media giant touted its combined registration figures from Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, extrapolating from conversion rates from several states. Seriously? We all know that Facebook has millions of fake profiles.  In fact, I get friend requests from fake profiles constantly. So who decided that it would be okay for them to register “millions of people” to vote? And the way that some states are aggressively promoting mail-in voting is making a lot of people really upset.  One of my readers that intends to vote in person told me that in the past five weeks “my wife and I have received three requests each for mail in ballots!” Another one of my readers has been very confused by the forms that she has been getting in the mail, because they make it seem like voting by mail is not optional… “A few weeks ago I got a form in the mail about voting by mail. Days later I asked a neighbor about it because I want to vote in person and they said that we can vote in person. In today’s mail I received a letter from my secretary of state asking me why I had not begun the process yet. It doesn’t say that it’s optional, they are just leading us to believe it’s the only way we are going to be allowed to vote.” This enormous push for mail-in votes is going to create an unprecedented mess, and the outcome of the presidential election is likely to be contested no matter who is ahead on election night. Needless to say, a contested outcome is likely to spark even more civil unrest, and that won’t be good for our country at all. This is such a critical moment for America, and the voice of every American should be respected. But if the integrity of our voting process is compromised, that could result in someone winning the election that the American people did not choose, and that is something that none of us should want. Myanmar Parties Raise Concern After Grenades Found Near Election Official’s Home

Myanmar’s military and political parties on Monday condemned intimidation tactics in the run-up to November polls after the weekend discovery of unexploded hand grenades at the home of the top election official in the capital Naypyidaw. With Myanmar headed to the polls Nov. 8 to elect national and state legislatures, campaigning has been hampered by increasingly tight restrictions aimed at fighting a resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the grenades in Naypyidaw, discovered just days after the Union Election Commission, the national body that oversees voting, ruled out a postponement of the balloting despite an appeal by the main opposition party and a group of small parties, citing rigid pandemic restrictions. Two hand grenades were discovered Saturday and Sunday at the residential compound of Thein Htwe, chairman of the Naypyidaw Election Subcommission, said spokesmen for the Myanmar Police Force and the army. Myanmar military spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun said a review of security footage by a military technical team indicated that the two grenades were both thrown near Thein Htwe’s residence on Saturday night, although one was not discovered until Sunday afternoon. Video recordings on the home’s four CCTV cameras indicate that someone threw an object into the compound from the street, where it hit a broom and landed by a tree, Zaw Min Tun said. “We searched in that area and found a grenade of the same type as the first one,” he said. “As we have seen in the CCTV footage, it was thrown in around 9:48 p.m., the same time the first one was thrown in.” “We are very close to the election date,” he said. “This could be intimidation. Besides, the perpetrators must have intended to stoke fear and disillusionment among various organizations.” The military spokesman’s concern was echoed by election observers, journalists, and lawmakers who said they view the incident as a threat to the elections. Maung Maung Swe, a lawmaker from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party who represents Mandalay region, said the incident was meant to cause panic in the run-up to the vote. “The perpetrators are trying to intimidate the public,” he said. “It is normal for some groups of people to respond like that when they see results they don’t expect. I want to appeal to the people not to panic if there are rumors and threats before the election,” said Maung Maung Swe. Particularly worrying Nandar Hla Myint, spokesman of the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), said the incident was particularly worrying because it is unknown which organization or individual threw the hand grenades. “If the authorities concerned examine the incident and reveal the truth, everything will be in the clear,” he told RFA. “Otherwise, there will be confusion and misconceptions among the parties. It will lead to concerns.” The USDP, Myanmar’s main opposition party, joined other small parties last week in an appeal to postpone the elections, arguing that size limits on rallies, stay-at-home-orders, and quarantines to fight a resurgence of COVID-19 all played to the advantage of 75-year-old leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling NLD. Aung Soe Win, assistant director of Naypyidaw Election Subcommission, said the body is not concerned about the incident. “We will keep performing our duties,” he told RFA. I don’t want to comment on the conclusions reached by many people.” Journalist Myint Kyaw, a member of the Myanmar Press Council, noted that no such acts of intimidation occurred before the last general elections in 2015. “Just last week there was a bloody brawl between USDP campaigners and NLD supporters,” he said. “Now, we have the bomb incident.” Sai Ye Kyaw Swar Myint, executive director of the elections watchdog group People’s Alliance for Credible Elections said, “No matter what the cause is, we should not accept violent acts regarding the election.” About 37.5 million voters in Myanmar’s population of 54 million are eligible to cast ballots in the Nov. 8 elections. Nearly 7,000 candidates from more than 90 parties, as well as independents, are vying for 1,171 seats available in both houses of the national parliament and in state and regional legislatures. Democrats Flip-Flop on Trump Taxes

Please respect our republishing guidelines - Click Here It’s easy to tell when it’s an election year: If the political mudslinging doesn’t provide a clue, then the agenda reversals should do the trick. And this, folks, is definitely a presidential election year like none other. True to form, the Democrats have flip-flopped on one of their main talking points:  doing away with President Donald Trump’s tax initiatives. Senate Democrats had implied they were going to reverse Trump’s taxes, and quickly, but now they will delay if Joe Biden is elected and the party controls the House and Senate. Their focus has switched to raising wages and climate control, with stimulus bills that could include tax incentives for green technology. They still haven’t taken their eyes off a wealth tax but are prudently tabling that until a later date. Apparently, the president’s tax plans aren’t as evil as the Dems proclaimed. The real reason behind the about-face has more to do with the election and seeking voter approval than anything else. Talk of raising taxes is never a good strategy when running for office, and especially not during a pandemic that has crippled the nation’s economy (which lately is starting to bounce back) and when so many Americans have been left without jobs and have lost businesses. The Dems are also divided on just how to tax the wealthy and the corporations. “I think we ought to make the decision when we have a better sense of where the economy is going,” said Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and who wins the election, of course. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) put the focus on the virus, saying: “We have so much on our plate. We’ve got to deal with COVID and testing. We need to put in place a whole thing to get our arms around the virus and a recovery act. I’m sure a tax piece will be in there somewhere, but No. 1 priority will be COVID.” However, some diehard Dems still want to push higher taxes on the rich. Charles Chamberlain, the executive director of Democracy for America, said it would be a “terrible idea” to wait to tax millionaires: “Over the course of the pandemic, we’ve seen billionaires make $600 billion since March while the minimum wage hasn’t been raised in over 10 years. I think the billionaires and millionaires, they have benefited from the [Trump] tax cuts and many of them have benefited from the pandemic itself.” Biden’s tax plans would raise the tax rate from 37% to 39.6% for individuals. For corporations, he proposes a tax rate change from 21% to 28%. If elected, the former vice president promised to make the corporate tax changes “on day one.” Whether that is a good move during campaign time, we will just have to wait and see. Still, it’s politics over people as usual, and even more so during a presidential election when promises are made (and rarely kept), opponents are verbally slashed to ribbons, and ideals and platforms are like a current, changing with every whisper of a breeze. ~ Read more from Kelli Ballard.

Dixie D’Amelio SHOCKED By Conspiracy Theory About Her Father and Charli

Charli and Dixie D’Amelio quickly rose to fame on the social media platform TikTok. Within a year, the sisters became a household name and one of the most popular duos in the entertainment industry.  And while gaining viral attention on TikTok is not rare, speculation and conspiracies revolving around how the pair gained this sort of popularity continue to circulate. Many social media users have their own assumptions or explanations for how this all may have happened. However, one particular conspiracy theory caught the attention of Dixie D’Amelio and resulted in her responding.  In less than one year, a user pointed out that Charli D’Amelio has gained over 90 million fans on the app. This, as well as the user’s theory for how this happened, appeared on a TikTok account called “spicyopinions” which spreads theories and information similar to this one.  @spicyopinions on TikTok But what is the user’s conspiracy theory? They explain that the sister’s popularity is all thanks to their father: Marc D’Amelio. Marc is a Republican and ran for a seat in the Connecticut State Senate back in 2018. However, he lost. This is where the conspiracy theory comes in. The TikTok user claims that the sisters only gained popularity in order to help Marc gain the younger vote in a “future election.” They continued to mention that Charli gains about 5 million new followers every week and that it’s simply unheard of in TikTok culture.  The theory continues by stating: “Her Dad is sus. He’s rich AND a politician. Those things never go together well.”  Most TikTok stars gain their popularity from their unique personalities, creativity and dance skills. However, many users have been quick to defend that there is something very suspicious about their rise to fame. In this instance, it had to do with a political motive. Due to the sisters’ popularity, this particular theory believes that younger and less informed voters (such as big fans of the D’Amelios) would vote for Marc in the future without doing much research. And once Dixie D’Amelio caught wind of this conspiracy, she decided to respond.  Under the theory posted on TikTok by spicyopinions, Dixie decided to comment. Her response “lol what” sums up how ridiculous that theory is, especially for the family to hear and find on the internet.  Dixie Responds Of course, fans of Dixie and Charli quickly came to their defense in the comments. Others still believe that this theory could definitely be true.  Guys there's a conspiracy theory about charli's fame and it actually makes sense. Photos began circulating the internet from her VSCO account which showed multiple Trump-Pence signs up on a wall. This caused the TikTok star to quickly begin receiving death threats and public backlash on social media.  Dixie D’amelio is receiving backlash after an old VSCO post led fans to believe that she is a Trump supporter. Dixie denied these claims. pic.twitter.com/bA220YFYkh — IG: @expsingshadycelebs (@shadycelebsig) May 6, 2020 Dixie responded to the resurfaced photo by tweeting that the photo was taken in someone else’s house. She went on to explain her political views and defend her character in another tweet. i am an independent voter and I will always vote for the person and never the party. i find it sad that i have received death threats due to inaccurate speculation of my political belief. i have never supported trump. period. — dixie (@dixiedamelio) May 6, 2020 This seems to be just another conspiracy theory about the sisters and D’Amelio family. Other popular theories are that their father is a private investor in TikTok or that their family is paying for their followers. This is amongst other crazy commentary and conspiracy theories that have been shared on the internet over the past year.  Is James Charles and Charli armadillo or whatever not the same person ? — H (@bbuggss) August 13, 2020 Charli, dua lipa and james charles are all the same person — legalize assisted suicide (@cosmicalbabe) April 15, 2020 Marc D’Amelio does seem to have his own presence online. He has over 7 million followers on TikTok alone. However, Charli remains the most popular creator on the platform with over 80 million followers to date.  After this conspiracy theory video reached thousands of views and over 50,000 likes, it quickly became a topic of conversation for TikTok fans around the world. Many do believe that Charli’s fast rise to fame is indeed suspicious, but that this theory just doesn’t add up.  can we talk abt charli and her sudden rise to fame for a sec? this app has been around for about 5 years. not ONCE has somebody rose to fame so quickly and with SO MANY FOLLOWERS. @charlidamelio #charlidamelio #tiktok #hype #fame — 5️⃣👄5️⃣ (@_ladillin_) September 14, 2020 Currently, Charli D’Amelio’s fame continues to grow and captivate more fans by the day. Her newest collaboration, a drink with Dunkin,’ has also taken the internet by storm. Fans and influencers have both tried and reviewed the TikTok sensation’s order ever since it was added to the official Dunkin’ menu.  Yup… it really has her name on it. 🙌 ➡️ @charlidamelio. Order 'The Charli' on the Dunkin' App. ✨#CharliRunsOnDunkin pic.twitter.com/fwH3hrh2IA — Dunkin' (@dunkindonuts) September 8, 2020 I’m so grateful for the world we live in. I mean, I can go to Dunkin and get a “charli” and then go to McDonald’s and get a sicko mode burger. In fact, Charli is on the path to 90 million followers on TikTok.  What do you think about this conspiracy? Is it absolutely ridiculous or convincing enough to believe?  Featured image by @spicyopinions on TikTok and Charli D’Amelio via Instagram.

Myanmar Election Campaign Launch Tripped up by Coronavirus Surge

Coronavirus cases have spiked in Myanmar this month just as campaigning opened for nationwide elections, forcing political parties to deal with restrictions on rallies, stay-at-home-orders, and quarantines in the two-month race for votes on Nov. 8. Like continental Southeast Asian neighbors Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, Myanmar largely avoided widespread COVID-19 infections that spread around the globe through the first half of the year. But Myanmar has seen a deadly return of the virus since mid-August, with spikes in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in populous areas and conflict zones, prompting health and election authorities to impose social distancing rules. The Ministry of Health and Sports announced Sunday that campaign gatherings would be restricted to 50 people who must remain six feet apart, wear face masks, and have access to hand sanitizer. The Union Election Commission (UEC) issued guidelines for political parties and candidates — suspending door-to-door campaigning and rallies in open areas and buildings in places where the government has issued stay-at-home orders. Localgovernments require candidates who visit their districts to undergo quarantines. As of Thursday, Myanmar registered 2,150 confirmed COVID-19 cases amid the resurgence of the highly contagious respiratory illness, adding 261 new cases overnight. The country now has had 14 coronavirus-related fatalities. About 37.5 million voters in Myanmar’s population of 54 million are eligible to cast ballots in the Nov. 8 elections. Nearly 7,000 candidates from more than 90 parties or who are independents are vying for 1,171 seats available in both houses of the national parliament and in state and regional legislatures. Campaigning is complicated by long-running wars in big states, such as Kachin and Shan, where swathes of territory is controlled by ethnic armies that restrict or ban voting. In western Rakhine state, a 21-month-old war has forced 200,000 rural villagers to take refuge in overcrowded shelters and hampered efforts to deal with what is now Myanmar’s worst coronavirus hotspot. USDP to file complaint On Monday, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who also chairs the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, canceled her first campaign stop in Yangon’s Kawhmu township — her current parliamentary constituency — after a staff member tested positive for the virus, and others in contact with the person were quarantined. “We have negotiated with the Health Ministry over election campaigning trips,” she told participants in an online forum. “I decided not to go to Kawhmu township for campaigning because we need to follow the Health Ministry’s orders when virus infections are on the rise.” But the NLD held campaign events in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw in which hundreds of people were involved in excess of the Health Ministry’s 50-person cap on gatherings, according to an official from the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). USDP chairman Than Htay told reporters on Wednesday that he would file a complaint with the ministry about the NLD’s failure to adhere to coronavirus restrictions. “Yesterday, I visited two villages in Zeyar Thiri township in Naypyidaw [and] I saw NLD party members campaigning with hundreds of people,” he said. “This is a blatant violation of COVID-19 restrictions. “I will send an official compliant letter to the ministry today,” he added. Credit: AFP 'We will try our best' Political parties and candidates in northern Rakhine state, the current epicenter of a coronavirus surge in Myanmar, also began campaigning Tuesday, though efforts to get their messages to voters are being hampered by COVID-19-related restrictions on activities and by the armed conflict between government forces and the Arakan Army. Health Ministry officials have put in place stay-at-home orders in all 17 townships in Rakhine, some of which are also affected by government-imposed internet service blackouts aimed at stifling rebel communications. The suspension of service has placed further limitations on campaigning activities, members of political parties said. Tun Aung Kyaw, a political steering committee member of the Arakan National Party (ANP), Rakhine state’s predominant party which represents the interests of ethnic Rakhine people, said ANP candidates cannot do any campaigning at all. “The UEC said we can have gatherings of up to 50 people, but the regional orders contradict this permission,” he said. “We have many challenges,” he added. “We have registered our candidates to contest in the election, [so] we will try our best to campaign for the election.” Pe Than, an ANP lawmaker who represents the Myebon township constituency and is running for reelection, said he and other candidates can’t do much given township stay-at-home orders and the ongoing hostilities in northern Rakhine. “Both circumstances are making election campaigning impossible,” he said. “The UEC hasn’t yet announced the townships that will not be able to hold elections, so we don’t know what to do. We just have to wait and see.” The Health Ministry also ordered lockdowns in all but one of 44 townships in Yangon region, home to 7.6 million people and Myanmar’s largest city, where the number of COVID-19 cases also has spiked. Small, minority parties at a loss Many candidates from small and ethnic-minority based parties say the virus restrictions will hinder their ability to compete, while some have suggested that the elections should be postponed. “The best we can do is go around the city in vehicles carrying a sound box playing campaign music and slogans,” said Ko Ko Gyi, chairman of the People’s Party, at the party’s campaign launch event on Tuesday. “Even for that, we now need permission from the Health Ministry.” “Regardless of the rules and regulations, they are very difficult to strictly follow on the ground,” he added. David Hla Myint, the chairman of the relatively new United Nationalities Democracy Party (UNDP) who is running against Aung San Suu Kyi for the Kawhmu constituency parliamentary seat, told local media on Thursday that the well-established parties will have an edge in campaigning. “The established parties can do various campaign activities despite the restrictions,” he said. “We will not have equal opportunities if we hold this election under these conditions.” “It would be best to postpone the election,” he said. Candidates from southeastern Myanmar’s Mon state also said they are finding it difficult to do election-related activities because of the increasing number of COVID-19 infections and tighter Health Ministry restrictions. “Now, everyone is cautious as the pandemic is getting worse,” said Aung Naing Oo from the Mon Unity Party who is the deputy speaker of the state parliament. “We are also working around-the-clock not to break the rules issued by the Health Ministry.” Reported by RFA’s Myanmar Service. Trump Will Not Budge on TikTok Sale Deadline

President Trump has announced that he will not be extending the deadline for the sale of TikTok to an American company.  The United States government has stated that they will officially not be extending the deadline of September 20th. This decision has caused both panic and anger for TikTok users and influencers on social media. It also creates urgency for companies to make negotiations faster in order to stop the app from being banned in the U.S.  If they ban @TikTok_us, I’ll stop paying taxes. — Step Ma (@shumythemoney) September 11, 2020 As a result of this announcement, social media users are already discovering and sharing a hack to keep the app even if it were to be “banned.” As long as users have the app deleted and updated to its latest version prior to it being banned, Youtubers are trying to expose tricks and a hack for keeping the platform.  [embedded content] Before Trump boarded Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews, he said: “We’ll see what happens. It’ll either be closed up or they’ll sell it.”  BREAKING REPORT: Trump say's There'll be NO EXTENSION of the TikTok deadline… "We'll either close up TikTok in this country for security reasons or it'll be sold… — Chuck Callesto (@ChuckCallesto) September 11, 2020 Due to the sale’s complexity, this deadline is a bit rushed for companies to purchase it. Some analysts previously predicted that the deadline would most likely be extended in order for a successful transaction to occur. However, Trump’s administration has made it clear that the consequences of keeping it any longer outweigh the app’s benefits.  In an executive order shared in August, Trump stated that ByteDance, the company that currently owns TikTok, may cause damage that would impact “the national security of the United States.”  The President originally announced that he was going to ban the app back in July of this year. Since then, it has been amongst his main priorities for the country before the November election. This has caused some anger and backlash due to the importance of keeping the current global pandemic under control seemingly taking a back-burner.  Isn’t tiktok supposed to be banned on the 15th?? Idk if it’ll actually happen bc trump lies a LOT but still what — ✰ ella ✰ (@hollyolly23) September 11, 2020 WATCH: 'I am not extending deadlines,' says President Trump on a sale of TikTok's U.S. assets https://t.co/wqWyLAppvC pic.twitter.com/o92rJvnYQO — Reuters Business (@ReutersBiz) September 11, 2020 TikTok has sued the Trump administration for what it said was a “heavily politicized” executive order. In a post announcing the case, TikTok said: “We far prefer constructive dialogue over litigation. But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our US operations — eliminating the creation of 10,000 American jobs and irreparably harming the millions of Americans who turn to this app for entertainment, connection, and legitimate livelihoods that are vital especially during the pandemic — we simply have no choice.” Microsoft is a potential buyer for the platform. However, it is unclear whether or not the two companies will be able to reach a deal by this closely approaching deadline.  hurry up and buy tiktok — Kristi ✰ (@kristimathura) September 11, 2020 TikTok continues to grow in popularity and the idea of it going away is difficult for a lot of influencers and users. Many have taken to other apps such as Twitter to complain and express their hope for it to remain in The United States.  TikTok is so good, and I’ll be sad if Trump really does ban it / if they have to sell to someone who will screw it up 🙁 — Zain (@calizoned) September 9, 2020 During the first few months of this year, the app was downloaded 315 million times. It currently has over 2 billion downloads around the world. Many have already referenced it as a “cultural phenomenon.”  @tiktok_us please don't go, we need you😭😭😭 #savetiktok — Decarol (@itsbabydiva) September 11, 2020 The app being a “threat” to national security has caused major debate online. However, cybersecurity experts said its risk is “highly theoretical.” Also, they confirmed, according to CNN, that there is “no evidence to suggest that the app’s user data has been compromised by Chinese intelligence.” @tiktok_us For the record, if Trump’s stupid ban takes place you’re staying on my phone, and there’s nothing that orange man can do about it #savetiktok — Chris Green (@ChrisGreenJ) September 11, 2020 According to CNBC, Microsoft and Walmart have officially teamed up for a potential deal. However, a third company, Oracle, has also made bids on the application.  We now have 4 days for Microsoft to buy TikTok again. Thanks Trump! You really do know how to put the D**k in dictator! #saveusmicrosoft #savetiktok — WholesomeWeeaboo (@SarahFye9001) September 11, 2020 @Microsoft BUY TIKTOK PLEASE IM BEGGING pic.twitter.com/UobQkowfA2 — ًr (@locatiqn) September 11, 2020 In a recent emailed statement by a TikTok spokesperson, it stated that the app and company is “committed to continuing to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform for many years to come.” Hey @tiktok_us should we be worried? If Tiktok gets banned, will all of our content disappear?!? Thank you! 😳😳😳@TikTokSupport #savetiktok #TikTok — Rob Flaska (Robs 🐜) (@RobFlaska) September 11, 2020 It seems as though yet another social media platform has been political.  The deadline, however, may be able to be pushed back by the courts. This decision will only be able to be made after they consider ByteDance’s arguments that the executive orders regarding TikTok are illegal.  Will you miss TikTok if it gets banned?  The popular social media platform seems to have an unpredictable future when it comes to its future status in The United States. A deadline extension may be the only way for it to continue its existence.
